Yintime for Springtime with Carla 16/4/20

04.05.2020
In addition to my Seasonal Flow Classes I've added this special one-off practice to help balance the vinyasa-based work that we do in regular classes with a practice that encourages stillness and deep relaxation. In Springtime there is most definitely a call to movement and growth in nature, and in Seasonal Yoga, we acknowledge the concept that we are indeed mirrors of nature. In order to bring about good health and harmony to all of our bodily systems, our mind and our spirit we must learn from and work with the cycles of nature and not against them. Sometimes we feel completely out of tune with nature balance due to excess stress, exhaustion, poor posture, too much tech time, not enough time in nature, dietary choices etc. etc. When you recognise this, it is important to become still and take a moment (or in this case 1.5hrs!) to draw inwards and connect to your inner wisdom and reflect. Yin Yoga is a perfect way for us to drop in and connect to that inner wisdom. The practice and can be a tonic but also may present a challenge for you, especially if you are used to being on the go every waking minute! You'll be offered a sequence of seasonal poses which you are encouraged to hold at the 'sweet spot', or the 'comfortable edge' of your ability. When you hold a pose, you then allow gravity to draw you inwards, you ask the mind to gently focus on the breath, you give it time. Then, the fascia (connective tissue) in the body begins to respond and stretch, open and release. It's a wonderful and gentle way to increase flexibility and mobility in the body. The poses we will do will specifically help to stimulate and nourish the energetic flow of the liver and gallbladder. Both are considered to be dominant and of vital importance to us in the spring season. If you consider what the liver does for you within your body you'll no doubt come up with the word 'detoxify'. Well it has 500+ functions in the body and works very hard for us to sustain good health, think of it as constantly spring cleaning you from the inside! The gall bladder has a more simple function of collecting and concentrating bile made in the liver and sends it on it's way via the small intestine. In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine, a holistic health system dating back 5000yrs) the 5 element system is always at play, and if one element is out of balance then dis-ease arises. The wood element is dominant in spring and governs the health of both liver and gallbladder, but also the eyes, tendons and ligaments too. The elements also have symbolic associations with them and it's considered that the emotion of anger can be particularly strong at this time of year. With all things in nature nothing is inherently good or bad but when something is repressed or completely unchecked then it can reap havoc. So while we may think of anger as something to be avoided, as long as it is in balance with a benevolent heart then it can be used as a catalyst for the greater good. Vision, planning and decision making are also fundamental aspects of this season, think of planting seeds of positive intention in the spring! So in this special class we shall be covering all of this and more PLUS we will finish with a peaceful seasonal yoga nidra to finish. Hope to see you over zoom! Namaste, Carla

Snow Flow Yoga!

28.02.2018
Trapped in the house because of all the snow?! As we've seen the first ever red weather warning in Scotland we at Prana Yoga Studio had to sadly cancel all of our classes for the sake of our precious yogis! So while you're all safe and cozy indoors we thought you might like to join Carla with a 45 minute class from the comfort of your own home! The first of what we hope will be a series of videos to offer you some yoga when you can't manage to get to a class at our lovely studio. Namaste! www.pranayogastudio.co.uk

Meditation & Relaxation

'I Choose Peace' 15 minute Meditation with Carla Webster

19.03.2020
This is a meditation for these turbulent times when you may be feeling overwhelmed and have a busy mind. Here we are using simple techniques to harness and quiet a busy mind focussing on: the cycles of the breath the movements of the breath at the heart centre, the pauses between the breaths, and a mantra 'I Choose Peace', Practice of these techniques give you the opportunity to make a conscious choice at any moment: Do I choose to let this situation and my reactions control me? Or do I have control over my state of mind? Each time you harness the mind back to your point of focus you are making a conscious choice, and as the point of focus resides at the heart, the choice is, ultimately, to be at peace. It is my hope that you enjoy and gain some benefit from this practice. Feel free to practice longer if you have the time, and as often as you wish. Om Shanti!
