A powerful class that will promote a stronger more empowered you! Yoga is not just about physical strength; it also cultivates mental fortitude. This practice will encourage you to stay present on and off the mat. Our breathing techniques will ease and enable you to make space in the body, promote mental clarity, focus and relaxation. It will be our power tool throughout our practice helping enable us for some of the more challenging postures, which will be offered with variations. Self Practice classes offer you individual tuition within a group class setting.
Often referred to as 'Mysore-Style' this class is suitable for those just starting out on their yoga journey to those with an established self practice. The teacher offers you poses from the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga, beginning with sun salutations, then a standing sequence, seated poses and 'finishing' postures.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Self Practice is a yoga method devised by Sri K Patthabi Jois based on traditional yoga teachings and is an ideal practice not only intermediate and advanced practitioners but also for the beginner. You are given a set of postures to practice at your own pace to allow for a natural development of your postures, breathing and mental clarity. The teacher is there to individually guide and assist you throughout the class. You have the opportunity to stay for the whole 1.5 hours or choose a length of time within 6.30-8am that suits you.
The following text is extracted from KPJAYI, MYSORE:
Vinyasa means breathing and movement system. For each movement, there is one breath. For example, in Surya Namskar there are nine vinyasas. The first vinyasa is inhaling while raising your arms over your head, and putting your hands together; the second is exhaling while bending forward, placing your hands next to your feet, etc.
There are three places of attention or action: posture, breathing system and looking place. These three are very important for yoga practice, and cover three levels of purification: the body, nervous system and mind. They are always performed in conjunction with each other. Asanas purify, strengthen and give flexibility to the body. Breathing is rechaka and puraka, that means inhale and exhale. Both the inhale and exhale should be steady and even, the length of the inhale should be the same length as the exhale. Breathing in this manner purifies the nervous system. Dristhi is the place where you look while in the asana. There are nine dristhis: the nose, between the eyebrows, navel, thumb, hands, feet, up, right side and left side. This class welcomes all those who are interested in getting to grips with the foundational postures, whether it's your first time in a class or if you're a seasoned yogi. It will run for an hour and will include some introduction to breath work; a flow designed with the beginner in mind; and finally, some relaxation at the end, either in the form of a restful yoga nidra or a short meditation. Modifications for the postures will always be offered and use of props will enable us to find our poses safely and comfortably, allowing us to feel the benefits no matter where our bodies are that day. This 60 minute bedtime flow class is suitable for all levels. We will always work with the energy of the season, beginning with breath work to relax and centre ourselves before starting the Asana (posture) practise. I will offer lots of modifications/ variations for each pose allowing us to feel confident and secure as we flow through the class, we always have lots of fun and laughter too! The best part of practising at this time is that we are winding down for bedtime, finishing with a lovely long yoga nidra: the yogic sleep, so when you go home you can just flop straight into bed super relaxed if you fancy! Gentle Yoga for Deep Rest
This is a restful practice that is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching using asanas, pranayama and props to support comfortable poses. We can achieve physical, mental and emotional relaxation, through use of meditation and yoga nidra creating harmony between body and mind, to encourage a tranquil night's sleep. Nicole Maxwell
